KYIV — Russia has launched a fresh wave of massive aerial assaults targeting Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and the northeastern city of Sumy. These latest bombardments in 2026 have rendered Ukraine's air defense, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, almost entirely ineffective, fueling speculation about President Vladimir Putin's intent to escalate the conflict.
The intense attacks reportedly involved various types of missiles and drones, creating widespread panic among civilians. Explosions were distinctly heard across different parts of the cities, causing significant damage to vital infrastructure and residential buildings.
Mayor Klitschko, in his deeply concerned statement, revealed that Ukraine's air defense systems are facing immense challenges.
