ROME – A significant initiative was launched by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) in conjunction with the Italian Melanoma Institute (IMI) in 2026 to protect the health of young athletes. This melanoma prevention program targets participants in youth sailing championships, recognizing the amplified risk of skin cancer due to intensive ultraviolet (UV) exposure in aquatic sports environments.

Excessive sun exposure, especially for individuals spending extended periods at sea, has long been identified as a primary risk factor for melanoma development. Aquatic sports environments, with UV radiation reflecting off the water's surface, drastically increase the intensity of this exposure, making young sailors a vulnerable group.

This collaborative program primarily aims to raise awareness about the dangers of melanoma and the urgency of early detection among athletes, coaches, and parents. Comprehensive education is deemed crucial for instilling self-protection habits from an early age.

The program's implementation encompasses several pillars. One includes free skin screenings conducted by specialist dermatologists from IMI during championship events. Furthermore, educational seminars and the distribution of informative materials on effective skin protection are also a key focus.

Dr. Andrea Rossi, Head of the Dermatological Oncology Department at IMI, explained that data indicates a rising trend of melanoma cases in young populations, including those active in outdoor sports. 'Early detection is the main key to a good prognosis. This program is a proactive step to protect the future of our athletes,' he stated during a press conference.

In line with this, FIV President Marco Bianchi affirmed the federation's commitment to athlete welfare. 'Success on the water must be balanced with long-term health. This program embodies our responsibility to ensure young athletes are not only high-achieving but also healthy,' Bianchi said.

The high risk for sailors stems not only from direct sun exposure. The reflective effect of water can multiply the UV radiation hitting the skin, even on cloudy days. Protection such as waterproof sunscreen, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses becomes critically vital.

Experts emphasize the importance of regular skin checks and awareness of changes in moles or skin lesions. Any suspicious signs should be immediately consulted with a specialist doctor for further evaluation.

Through this initiative, a new culture is expected to form in the world of sailing, where skin protection becomes an inseparable part of training and competition routines. This is not just about winning, but about maintaining lifelong health.

IMI and FIV invite all components of the sailing sports community, from athletes and coaches to families, to actively participate and disseminate this important information. Collective collaboration will strengthen prevention efforts.

Editorial Insight: This melanoma prevention program demonstrates an evolving understanding of health within competitive sports. Not only athlete performance but also their sustained well-being is now a priority. Similar initiatives should be replicated across various other sports involving extreme environmental exposure, to create a more holistic and responsible sports ecosystem.
