ANDRIA — Italian Republic President, Sergio Mattarella, led a solemn ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the devastating train accident that shook the Puglia region. The tragic incident on July 12, 2016, claimed 23 lives and injured dozens. The commemorative event, held respectfully in Andria in 2026, was attended by the extended families of the victims and several survivors, reopening old wounds while simultaneously affirming a commitment to never forget.
The unfortunate event, known as the “Scontro tra treni” (clash between trains), occurred on a single track connecting Andria and Corato, when two passenger trains collided head-on. The accident became one of the worst railway disasters in modern Italian history, triggering a wave of national mourning and serious questions regarding public transport safety standards.
Now, a decade later, the painful echo of loss still resonates powerfully. President Mattarella, in his deeply meaningful speech, emphasized the importance of maintaining a collective memory of the tragedy. "We gather here, not merely to remember, but to renew our promise to those who perished and to the families who bravely continue their lives," President Mattarella stated, his voice tinged with emotion.
The Head of State’s presence in Andria symbolized solidarity and recognition of the unending suffering. From the outset, the government has strived to ensure accountability and to rectify systemic flaws. However, for many families, the pursuit of comprehensive justice remains an ongoing journey.
Victims’ families, holding photographs of their loved ones, gathered in a poignant silence. Tears occasionally welled up, tracing paths down cheeks weathered by time and sorrow. They have endured ten years under the shadow of loss, seeking solace amidst a legal system often perceived as slow and convoluted.
A survivor, Antonella, recounted her harrowing experience. "Every time I hear a train, the memory returns. I am fortunate to have survived, but a part of me died that day, alongside my fellow passengers," she said with tearful eyes, holding the hand of a relative of one of the victims.
The Andria tragedy also spurred significant reforms in Italy’s regional railway infrastructure. Modernization projects for tracks and the implementation of automatic safety systems have been massively accelerated to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. Nevertheless, the work is far from complete, given the complexity of the country’s transport network.

Senator Paolo Rossi, a representative from the Puglia region, also present, stated that rebuilding public trust in the railway system is a long-term endeavor. "We must continue to learn from past mistakes, ensuring every inch of track and every train carriage meets the highest safety standards," he affirmed.
The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths at the memorial monument erected in honor of the victims. A minute of silence was observed, accompanied by the Italian national anthem, as a final tribute to the souls lost in the tragedy. The bitter memories of ten years ago are hoped to serve as an eternal reminder for all parties to always prioritize safety.
