BERLIN — Former German Economics Minister, Robert Habeck, has drawn sharp criticism from the transparency watchdog Lobbycontrol following his decision to join the private investment firm Urban Partners as a senior advisor in 2026. This move was immediately labeled as “problematic” and potentially eroding public trust in political integrity.
Lobbycontrol, a non-profit organization focused on monitoring lobbying and political transparency, openly raised the alarm. They assert that a rapid transition from public office to the private sector is susceptible to perceptions of conflicts of interest and the misuse of influence.
In its official statement, Lobbycontrol highlighted the phenomenon known as the “revolving door.” This practice, according to them, allows former high-ranking officials to use connections and information gained during their tenure for their personal benefit or for their new companies.
Habeck, who held a crucial economic portfolio during his time in office, will now provide strategic advice to Urban Partners, an entity operating in business and investment. This transition occurred relatively quickly after he ceased to hold a government position.

“Lobbycontrol asserts that transitions of this kind are generally problematic because they create the impression of potential misuse of connections or information obtained while in office,” stated a spokesperson for the organization, as quoted in a recent report.
