ROME — The Italian government, through Sviluppo Lavoro Italia, officially launched its ambitious “Autoimpiego” (Self-Employment) strategy in 2026, a national initiative designed to empower thousands of young people across various regions to achieve economic independence. The program aims to reduce youth unemployment rates and foster entrepreneurial innovation, especially in areas requiring significant economic stimulation.

This strategic move represents the government’s response to structural labor market challenges and its desire to cultivate a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Sviluppo Lavoro Italia, as a key institution in national workforce development, leads the program’s implementation with a substantial budget allocation.

Italy’s Minister of Labor, Luca Rossi, stated during the program’s launch conference, “The Autoimpiego initiative is not just about providing jobs; it is about instilling an entrepreneurial mindset in our youth. We want them to be the architects of Italy’s economic future, not merely waiting for opportunities.”

The strategy focuses on three main pillars. First, easy access to financing. The government has prepared attractive microcredit schemes and seed grants, enabling innovative ideas to materialize without capital constraints. Millions of Euros have been allocated to support nascent entrepreneurs.

The second pillar encompasses comprehensive training programs. Sviluppo Lavoro Italia will provide online and offline courses covering fundamental business aspects, from business planning, financial management, digital marketing, to regulatory compliance. These training modules are designed to be relevant to current and future market needs.

The third pillar is mentorship and business incubation. Participants will receive guidance from experienced mentors across various industry sectors. This support is expected to guide young entrepreneurs through the crucial early phases, significantly increasing their business success rates.

The Autoimpiego program targets young people aged 18 to 35 who wish to start their own businesses or develop startups. Priority is given to those residing in areas with high unemployment rates or regions experiencing depopulation, promoting equitable economic development.

Economic analyst Professor Elena Ferrari from Bocconi University welcomed the initiative. “Programs like Autoimpiego are crucial in modern economies. By providing tools and support, Italy is investing in its internal potential, fostering grassroots growth, and reducing reliance on an increasingly competitive traditional job market,” she commented.

However, the program’s implementation is not without challenges. Complex bureaucracy and a lack of awareness among the target demographic often pose significant hurdles. Sviluppo Lavoro Italia has expressed its commitment to simplifying procedures and launching a massive information campaign.

The Autoimpiego strategy is an integral part of Italy’s long-term vision for its workforce’s future. By investing in the independence and innovation of its youth, the government hopes to build a more resilient and sustainable economic foundation for the years to come.
