Ankara — The NATO Summit in Ankara in 2026 witnessed diplomatic tension as United States President, Donald Trump, openly reiterated his country's claim over Greenland. The controversial statement immediately sparked strong reactions, particularly from Germany, represented by Social Democratic Party (SPD) politician, Siemtje Möller, who asserted that such a claim undermines the principle of equal partnership and threatens territorial integrity.
President Trump, known for his unconventional diplomatic style, had previously shown strong interest in Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. On several occasions, he indicated a desire to purchase the strategic island, eliciting both surprise and global concern.
Responding to this, Siemtje Möller, an influential figure from the SPD who currently serves as Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Defence for Germany, issued a firm rejection. “It is completely out of the question. It will never happen that we agree to such a thing,” Möller stated in her declaration.
Möller emphasized that any discussion questioning the territorial integrity of member states or partners is by no means an expression of equal partnership. For her, such a claim tarnishes the spirit of collaboration and mutual trust essential within an alliance like NATO.
Greenland holds a highly vital geopolitical position. Located between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, the island is a crucial key for navigation security, natural resources, and strategic interests in the Arctic region, which is increasingly becoming a focus for global powers.
The United States' interest in Greenland is not new. In fact, in 1946, President Harry S. Truman once attempted to purchase Greenland from Denmark. This effort, similar to Trump's approach, was also firmly rejected by the Danish government at the time.
Trump's current stance has the potential to strain relations between the United States and Denmark, an important NATO ally. Such unilateral claims can create rifts within the alliance, especially amidst increasingly complex global security challenges.
International political analysts observe that President Trump's actions, amidst a Summit meant to strengthen unity, instead raise doubts about the US commitment to the fundamental principles of the alliance. Other European nations, including Germany, view the claim over Greenland as a serious violation of international law and national sovereignty. They fear that such a precedent could open the door for other unfounded territorial claims in the future.
The Danish government has consistently affirmed that Greenland is not property for sale. Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has repeatedly stated that Greenland is part of Denmark and is not available for purchase.
This incident highlights shifting dynamics in transatlantic relations and challenges the definition of partnership within the world's oldest military alliance. The NATO Summit in Ankara, instead of easing tensions, has deepened the debate about the future of the North Atlantic Alliance under controversial leadership.
