FLORENCE — The Italian Railway Network (RFI) has announced a suspension of train services in Florence until July 30, 2026. This policy will be enforced starting tomorrow, July 1, 2026, as part of the second phase of the crucial Ponte al Pino overpass construction project for the city's infrastructure. This line closure is expected to cause significant disruption to the mobility of residents and tourists in one of the world's leading art cities.
RFI's decision to halt train operations on these vital lines is based on the urgent need to complete the installation of the main structure of the Ponte al Pino Overpass. This project is an integral part of Florence's transportation network modernization, aiming to enhance rail capacity and safety, and reduce congestion at level crossings.
The second phase of this project focuses on lifting and positioning large bridge segments over the railway tracks. This complex technical process requires a complete sterilization of the work area to ensure the safety of workers and the integrity of the structure. Therefore, a total suspension of train traffic becomes an unavoidable step.
Starting July 1, 2026, passengers who typically use train services in Florence are advised to seek alternative transportation. RFI and local transport authorities are coordinating to provide replacement bus services on several strategic routes, although their capacity will naturally be limited compared to trains.

Elena Bianchi, Head of the Florence Department of Transportation, emphasized, "We have discussed with RFI and other public transport operators to prepare mitigation solutions. Our priority is to ensure residents can still move around despite this challenge."
