JAKARTA – The protracted war in Ukraine, initially viewed as a regional conflict, has now transformed into a 'Pandora's Box' that has unleashed a series of complex global crises in 2026. The invasion launched by Russia has triggered a wave of turmoil, ranging from energy disruptions and uncontrolled inflation in Europe to geopolitical tensions that are reshaping the global security architecture, threatening stability and prosperity across continents.
Three years since the initial escalation, the conflict's impact extends far beyond the front lines. The global economy is reeling from soaring inflation due to supply chain disruptions and surging prices of key commodities. Energy prices, particularly natural gas, have skyrocketed, forcing many European nations to face significant challenges in meeting their industrial and household needs.
Europe, in particular, is at the forefront of this energy crisis. Massive efforts to diversify gas supplies away from Russia have created significant pressure on national budgets and the purchasing power of citizens. Policies like Italy's fuel excise tax cuts and subsidy reforms are clear reflections of the fiscal adaptations required to mitigate the impact of price hikes.
Furthermore, the abolition of universal fuel subsidies in Italy, replaced by income-based aid, demonstrates how governments are struggling to balance fiscal needs with social protection.
