At 02:30 local time, the fire alarm first sounded. Eyewitnesses reported thick smoke billowing into the air before flames were seen engulfing the roof. Within hours, all parts of the house, from the ground floor to the attic, collapsed and were reduced to ashes, leaving behind only charred debris.
Approximately 50 firefighters, supported by dozens of fire trucks, battled for over five hours to bring the situation under control. They worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby densely populated buildings. Thanks to the team's dedication, the danger of the fire spreading was averted, although the main house could not be saved.
The family residing in the house reportedly managed to escape just before the fire intensified, but they now face the bitter reality of losing all their possessions. Several neighbors and relatives were seen providing moral support and initial assistance to the affected family, demonstrating the solidarity of the Zetel community.
Zetel police spokesperson, Markus Schmidt, stated that a fire investigation team has been deployed to the scene. "We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of this fire, whether there are indications of negligence or other factors," he said in a press statement. The process of identifying evidence on the ground will take time.
Initial estimates of material losses are projected to reach hundreds of thousands of Euros, equivalent to billions of rupiah. This value includes the building structure, furniture, and invaluable personal belongings. Property insurance is expected to somewhat alleviate the family's burden, but the emotional toll is undoubtedly much greater.
Zetel, as part of the Friesland district in Niedersachsen, is a quiet small town known for its traditional house architecture. This incident has become a serious concern for the local government, particularly in efforts to mitigate disasters and raise awareness of fire hazards in densely populated settlements.
