BERLIN – Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) faces a severe internal crisis after its leader, Friedrich Merz, implicitly acknowledged his failure in efforts to reunify East and West Germany. This statement immediately drew fierce criticism from Neue Zurcher Zeitung (NZZ) journalist Beatrice Achterberg, who highlighted the deep divisions within the CDU itself.
Achterberg, in her latest analysis, asserted that threats of Bundeszwang or federal coercion often issued by the Union, particularly by Merz, only exacerbate polarization. According to her, the fractured unity within the CDU between its Eastern and Western factions reflects major unresolved challenges since German reunification.
Friedrich Merz has given up on uniting East and West, Achterberg stated, quoting her perspective on the current political situation in Germany. She pointed out that harsh rhetoric and threats of coercion would only widen the divide, rather than bridge differing political and social views.
This criticism is not the first directed at Merz's leadership. Previously, CDU elites had also sharply criticized Governor Schwesig as 'too polarizing', indicating internal dissatisfaction with a divisive political approach.
Merz himself has repeatedly attempted to build an image as a unifying figure, yet his actions and political statements are often seen as reinforcing divisions. This is particularly evident in East German states, where anti-establishment sentiment and support for populist parties like the Alternative for Germany (AfD) continue to grow.
The AfD's growing threat to the CDU in recent polls, especially in the East, shows that Merz's strategy has not been effective. The AfD's victory in Saxony-Anhalt recently, as reported, triggered demands for change within the CDU.
The internal divisions highlighted by Achterberg are not trivial issues. They indicate that the CDU, as one of Germany's largest political parties, has been unable to create an inclusive narrative acceptable to the entire spectrum of German society, particularly those residing in the former East German territories.
The challenge of German unity transcends geographical boundaries. It is about ongoing social, economic, and political integration. When the leader of a major party implicitly admits failure, it sends a worrying signal about the capacity of political institutions to overcome historical differences.
The threat of federal coercion mentioned by Achterberg also raises questions about the principle of German federalism. The use of Bundeszwang should be a last resort in a constitutional emergency, not a tool to impose political will in internal party or regional debates.
German reunification in 1990 was a historic event that reshaped Europe's political map. However, more than three decades later, old wounds and structural differences remain obstacles. The CDU's ability to bridge these gaps will determine its political future and Germany's overall stability.
