ROME – A recent study released by Fondazione Libellula reveals a concerning reality among teenagers, both male and female. Although this younger generation can identify stereotypes, aesthetic pressures, and even sexism in their daily interactions, they struggle to consistently distance themselves from or reject these influences. This phenomenon highlights the complexities of social development in the digital age.

The research, involving thousands of adolescent respondents, indicates a significant gap between intellectual understanding and actual behavior. Teenagers can verbally explain forms of sexism and gender stereotypes, but when confronted with real-life situations, their reactions tend to be passive or even accommodating. This serves as a profound reflection on prevailing socialization patterns.

Fondazione Libellula, an institution focused on gender equality issues and violence prevention, states that these findings are crucial. We observe a high level of awareness among teenagers regarding these sensitive issues, said a senior researcher from Fondazione Libellula. However, that awareness has not fully translated into firm rejection, especially when social pressure is strong.

This study outlines several areas where this inconsistency is evident:

  • Gender Stereotypes: Adolescents understand that gender does not limit roles or abilities, but often remain trapped in traditional division of labor or expectations of masculinity/femininity.
  • Aesthetic Pressures: Both male and female teenagers are aware of unrealistic beauty or handsomeness standards on social media, yet they still feel pressured to conform.
  • Verbal Sexism: They can identify sexist jokes or comments but hesitate to reprimand or distance themselves from the perpetrators.

Another emerging aspect is the role of digital media. Online environments often become fertile ground for the spread of stereotypes and aesthetic pressures. Ironically, platforms that should facilitate self-expression instead reinforce restrictive norms, trapping teenagers in unhealthy expectations.

Social psychologist Maria Rossi, from the University of Rome, observes that these research results are not entirely surprising. Adolescence is a period of identity search, and peer approval is often a top priority, explained Rossi. Rejecting prevailing norms, even if those norms are harmful, requires great strength of character and social support.

This gap between awareness and action is also closely related to informal education. Learning at home and the influence of the surrounding environment play a vital role in shaping how teenagers react to social pressure. School curricula may teach equality, but implementation in daily life often differs.

The importance of character education and digital literacy in schools is becoming increasingly urgent. Equipping critical thinking skills, the courage to voice disagreement, and an understanding of the long-term consequences of discriminatory behavior needs to be strengthened. This aligns with the view that Essential Education, Yet Not Guaranteeing the Future of the Younger Generation if not followed by the development of social skills.

Society as a whole also bears responsibility. Adults, as role models, must demonstrate consistency in rejecting sexism and stereotypes. An environment that supports authentic self-expression, free from judgment based on appearance or gender, is key to empowering the younger generation.

This study serves as a warning to all parties that awareness alone is not enough. Collective and sustained efforts are needed to build an environment that enables teenagers not only to recognize, but also to actively combat harmful social practices, in order to achieve true equality in 2026 and beyond.

Editorial Insight:

The findings from Fondazione Libellula highlight a social paradox: awareness without courage. This phenomenon is not merely an issue for individual teenagers but a reflection of systemic failures in translating equality values into dominant behavioral norms. The primary challenge lies in how we, as a society, can empower the younger generation to act in accordance with the values they believe to be true, even under strong social pressure. Without holistic intervention from families, schools, and media, the gap between knowledge and action will continue to widen, threatening progress toward a more inclusive society.
